The Unitree R1 Basic is an ultra-lightweight humanoid robot standing about 121–123 cm tall — roughly the height of a young child — and weighing approximately 25–29 kg, light enough for a single adult to carry and load into a standard vehicle. It has 26 degrees of freedom, distributed as 6 DOF per leg (12 total), 5 DOF per arm (10 total), a 2-DOF waist and a 2-DOF head. The added waist articulation (±150° yaw and ±30° roll) and the pan-and-tilt head are what distinguish the Basic from the entry-level R1 Air: the waist enables coordinated whole-body athletic maneuvers such as cartwheels and handstands, while the head lets the robot actively track people and objects without repositioning its whole body.

Its binocular stereo camera system is the key upgrade over the R1 Air, computing genuine depth from two offset views for reliable close-range obstacle avoidance, object localization and human-presence sensing. An 8-core onboard compute platform runs Unitree's UnifoLM multimodal framework, and the R1 Basic ships as a closed "civilian" platform positioned for individual buyers, education and hands-on robotics experimentation rather than custom SDK development.
